The course aims to provide IENs with an understanding of the jurisprudence related to nursing and its implications for nursing practice including the legal and ethical framework that regulates nursing practice in Canada. An overview of the Health Professions Act, registration requirements for IENs, the role of the regulatory bodies, professional obligations and standards, scope of practice, disciplinary processes, and expected conduct within the profession will be provided. The IEN will gain knowledge of how the Canadian healthcare system provides affordable and accessible healthcare services at all levels of delivery. The different levels of care including primary, secondary, and tertiary care will be described and the role of the multidisciplinary team as health care providers will be defined. The role of advocacy for individual and population health will be described by emphasizing the importance of preventative healthcare, identifying risk factors, promoting healthy lifestyles, and implementing evidence-based interventions for various health conditions.
